About Me
I am a psychotherapist and organizational consultant in private practice. About ten years ago, I became fascinated with the Sumerian Goddess of Agriculture, Lilith, sister to Innana, Queen of Heaven and Earth, who has dislodged from her Huluppu Tree along with her serpent by the shepard Demuzi who was to be married to Innana. He built the wedding bed from the tree as well as Innana's thrown. Lilith became the Goddess who walks between the worlds, bringing in the souls of the newborn and escorting the souls of the dying back across the veil. She is most always depicted with her snake and her pet owls. I gave up on the Adam connection years ago because it never made much sense to me. Just another Christian twisting of a pagan myth. What I did learn about Lillith is that in Jewish lore she is known as the "whore of God." It is written, if I remember correctly, that Sophia, Queen of Heaven, was not allowed to consort with Yahweh, for whatever reason (I forgot), so Yahweh had to have some female companionship. This was assigned to Lilith. She gets dumped on all the time. As I was just reading the introduction to the film, I started thinking about the way in which single females get treated by society and wonder if this is not linked to the Lilith myth is some way. I think it is less pervasive in Western society today but there is still a certain pariah attached to the dangerous, single woman, especially if she is older. In researching Lilith, I found that when, according to Christian lore, she fled the Garden of Eden, she went island from the Red Sea, which may perhaps have been what today is Djibouti. There is an area in an inlet there known as the Goubet and just off the shore maybe a few hundred feet out in the water is extinct volcano known as the Devil's Island. I always saw the place as the Devil's playground and it certainly looks like the right setting for a really angry Goddess. I am so happy that Elza did this film. Thank you.
